About the "Hand of Dunn" series
Oct 15, 2014
The original plot for this series was created as a direct result of boredom. It was sometime in the early 1960s and I was working for a seismic survey company in the middle of Saskatchewan, but in the evenings I grew bored. I was not like most of the rest of the crew who played poker, shot pool, chased the local women or drank beer. So for three weeks I sat in a dingy hotel room and created a plot line about someone who had a more interesting life than mine. That original plot was written by hand in an old school binder that I carried with me on all my jobs.
That binder and those notes travelled with me for years and every once in a while I would haul it out and add another detail or another complication. In the early 1980s I read through my notes and realised that I had made notes about details that were too broad in scope to be covered well in one book with one main character. I damn near abandoned the whole mess then, but instead I set it aside and considered the situation. By 1986 I had made up my mind to split the book into at least three parts and since I had an early laptop computer at the time, I spent several months rewriting many of my original notes as the history of a family and their friends. Of course that complicated matters a little since various generations of any family have different viewpoints and different ideals. Not only that, but there are often two or three generations of a family alive at one time, which meant my individual stories had to 'interact' with each other. Since the actions of any one character might effect the actions of another character in another book, I was somewhat stymied at how to handle plot details that might affect the characters in a different book and thereby spoiling some of the plot in one book or another.
In early 2012 I came up with the idea of simultaneously posting several of the stories online so that plot details for Book 2 would not be revealed in Book 1 and so on. The process was quite involved, but as I worked on the resultant plots for those books, I made the pleasant discovery that I could rewrite the plot for Book 2, "Beyond the Mirror" as a virtually independent novel without spoiling any important plot details in other books, so I did. However, portions of Books 1, 3 and 4 are so thoroughtly interconnected that I'll have to resort to either alternate or simultaneous postings of many chapters of those three books. Thankfully I can do that on this website.
Unfortunately for the readers of this series, I do have a personal life and I'm also working on several other stories at the same time. As a result, you will have to be patient with the progress of all three books, but that's just the way things are.K Pelle.
